What is Unmet Financial Need?

To be competitive, applicants must demonstrate considerable unmet financial need.

Unmet financial need is educational costs that exceed to an appreciable degree other grant awards. Students receiving full-funding (excluding loans or work study) for their proposed studies will not have unmet need and will not be competitive for these scholarships.

While the Foundation considers academic excellence first in evaluating candidates, competitive applicants must also demonstrate unmet financial need, which has two components:

  • Education costs that are appreciably greater than the total amount of other scholarships or grant awards.
  • Insufficient student and family income to meet educational costs.
